Learning through play, every day

At Rata St, tamariki learn through hands-on experiences in a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment. They are encouraged to be themselves, follow their curiosity, build confidence and make friends.

What tamariki get up to

Every day looks a little different, because children lead their own learning.

Creating

From painting and building to messy play and creating masterpieces, our tamariki explore their imaginations, experiment with different materials and express their ideas, often working together with friends.

Outdoors

Our outdoor spaces are full of opportunities to run, climb, dig and explore. From sandpit adventures to discovering the world around them, tamariki learn through active, hands-on play.

Stories and waiata

Stories and waiata are a special part of our day, sparking imagination, building language skills and celebrating te reo Māori through books, songs and shared moments together.

Friendships

We encourage tamariki to build friendships, learn to share and take turns, show kindness and care for one another, and develop a strong sense of belonging.

KidsCan

In conjunction with KidsCan, we provide delicious lunches every day, along with clothing to help keep our tamariki warm, happy and ready to learn.

Duffy Books in Homes

Thanks to Taumarunui New World, our tamariki receive four free books each year to take home and enjoy! We love books and are passionate about encouraging a love of reading, growing little imaginations and sharing the joy of stories with whānau at home.

Ki Waho

Ki Waho is a regular off-site adventure offered to our older tamariki throughout the terms. It gives them the opportunity to explore the natural environment, take on new challenges and learn through outdoor experiences. These adventures help build confidence, independence and resilience, while encouraging curiosity, problem-solving and teamwork as they discover the world around them.

Guided by Te Whāriki

Te Whāriki is Aotearoa New Zealand's early childhood curriculum. We follow its principles, supporting children to be confident, curious and capable learners while nurturing their individual needs and interests.

Growth at Rata St is holistic: emotional, social, physical and cultural. As children grow, they build confidence, resilience and a strong sense of identity, supported by their whānau and our community.

Ready for school

We have a strong connection with our local schools. We want children to leave Rata St feeling confident, capable, curious and ready for their next step into school, while having had a really good time getting there.
